What if —

instead of recycling old resolutions
into carefully drafted manifestos
that waver and falter,

their good intentions dangling like slips
of a “Help Wanted” flyer
begging to be plucked,

too-oft forgot
in our daily rhythms and routines
as loose wads of paper

that didn’t make the cut,
tap-dancing down an alleyway
of year’s past —

we instead decide
to be resolute
within the mold we’re in,

and shape the surrounding earth;
not to fill in any gaps
but to simply meet us there.
